Cowboy Up

People can be meaner than horses

Meaner than horses.  They don’t treat you right.

Sometimes they take you out through the canyon,

Down in the corn crib where they make you stay all night.

You gotta Cowboy Up.

You gotta make your stand.

If you wanna drink from a silver cup.

An’ if you wanna play in the band.

You decide to ride with the deranged stranger

To the snow-capped mountains.  You never been there before.

There’s mud in the fountain.  All the signs say, “Danger”.

Then he hands you the key to that unlocked door.

- Chorus -

You wanna meet the girl that lives down in the junkyard,

Out by the burn barrel, ah but your mama says, “No.”

You see the colors swirl, there’s blood on the dull blade,

Smoke on the highway, hey, and it’s startin’ to snow.

- Chorus –

You wear the broken soul of a fallen angel

Pinned to your raincoat for the world to see.

You crawl down in a hole under the manger

Shakin’ with a cold sweat and your dreams are runnin’ free.

- Chorus -

People can be meaner than horses

Meaner than horses.  They don’t treat you right.

Sometimes they take you out through the canyon,

Down in the corn crib where they make you stay all night.

- Chorus Twice –

You gotta Cowboy Up!

NOTES:  Like many of my tunes, the basis of this song is a dream I had and like most of my tunes, it is autobiographical.
