Don't Step In It
I lived my first 12 years on a North Dakota farm
Where the winter’s cold as Hell and the summer’s damn warm.
I picked rocks for Uncle Johnny in the blazin‘ sun.
My favorite game was “Run, Rabbit, Run“.
When I turned 6 my Daddy sat me on a bale of hay
And he said, “Son, I got something important to say.”
“If it looks like shit, if it smells like shit,
If it feels like shit, and if it tastes like shit,
Then, hey, Don’t Step In It.”
When I turned twelve farms weren’t makin’ any money
So we headed to California, to the land of milk and honey.
I got a job at the Richfield station pumpin’ gas and fixin’ cars.
While my daddy hung out next door at the 211 bar.
Well, I studied real hard. I got a scholarship to Cal.
So I said, “I’m outta here!” and with a rebel yell, I said,
- Chorus -
I went off to college and I started smoking’ pot.
I dropped a little acid. No, I dropped a lot.
I ate peyote cactus and psilocybin shrooms.
I washed it down with Jack Daniels. I was ready for the broom.
But I pulled it all together. I did what I had to do.
An' with my Daddy’s words I made it through.
- Chorus -
Well I’ve lived a good life and I’ve partied just a little.
So now I’m only tryin’ to keep it in the middle.
I’m takin’ my time. I ain’t in no hurry.
I can’t be stressin’. I got no reason to worry.
I realize now that you only live twice
So I’m kickin’ it an’ livin’ by my Daddy’s advice.
- Chorus -

NOTES: I really was born on a dairy farm in central North Dakota where there are just two seasons, July and winter. It was a hard but wonderful place to grow up. The words in the chorus of this song were actually told to me by my father out in the barn one morning when I as about 6 years old. This is excellent advice that, unfortunately, I didn't always follow.
