Gypsy Band

I was rollin’ out of London.  I had my guitar in my hand,

Hittin’ the road real easy.   Headin’ down into Flemish land.

Headin’ down into Flemish land.

I took a few steps down, Lord, from the pedestal on which I used to stand.

And the changes don’t come easy when you travel in a Gypsy Band.

Travel in a Gypsy Band.

I was livin’ out on the edge, Lord, and out there you meet just a few.

An’ I can’t say that the living is easy but you can’t find a better view.

You can’t find a better view.

I don’t own no stretch of highway but the Lord knows I’ve seen my share

An’ I’d rather walk on rocks and gravel than on your paved roads leadin’ to a neon nowhere.

Don’t want your paved roads leadin’ to a neon nowhere.

You can philosophize to cheat your senses, invent religion that’ll soothe your soul.

You got the past to get you half way there.  Take today, hey.  Make it whole.

Take today, hey.  Make it whole.

You can stand on the dancing ocean.  Feel the moonlight’s gentle song.

It’s the last call for the crystal star ship.  It don’t cost nothin’ to come along.

But you got to board it now my friend.  We’ll travel on the wings of a prayer and a gypsy song.

Travel on the wings of a prayer and a gypsy song.

It makes me sad to see you waiting with silver chains upon your hands.

Can’t you hear the minstrel callin’?  Come on travel in a Gypsy Band.

Come on travel in a Gypsy Band.

NOTES:  I wrote this song in 1968 while hitchhiking from London to Dover to catch the hovercraft to Calais, France and then on to Antwerp, Belgium.  They call it Flanders and they speak Flemish which I totally did not understand but I stayed there for over a month and had a great time.
