Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

I had that dream again where I’m so uncomfortable.

I saw the crystal clown.  You know the one with the edgy laugh.

I heard that scream again, so unforgettable.

With my eyes cast down, I held your photograph.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.   Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.   Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.

I recall your chalk white face, dark shadowed eyes,

Thin ruby lips snarling down.

In that fog filled space under the red-orange skies

Where the black candles drip on the tarnished crown.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

I’ll take you down to the town.  Come on along with me.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

Slip on your evening gown.  There’s some things I’d kinda like you to see.

Along the dirty streets we gave the beggars alms.

Up on the red rock ridge, we mixed our medicine there.

Where the sky and the desert meet, just outside 29 Palms

We crossed the rainbow bridge into the thick night air.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

We walked in chains down those cold stone stairs

To where the soldiers stopped by the river’s edge.

We heard the guitar strains through the dead night air.

We saw the casket drop from that icy ledge.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

Turn around again in the fading light.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

Out where the air is thin, off on the edge of night.

We were lost and cold under a heavy weight.

We could barely move and it was hard to breathe.

I saw a soft warm light through an open gate.

The pale dancer there said it was time to leave.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.   Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

As she took my hand to drag me along

I felt her frozen skin shift and crawl.

In my clouded mind I heard the siren’s song

As we burst through the mist and we began to fall.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

I’ll take you up to the sky.  There’s some things I’d kinda like you to see.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh  Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh

It’s so easy to fly.  Come on along with me.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.   Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.

Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.   Hey, Hey, Yeh, Yeh.

NOTES:  This song recalls experiences with the Navaho indians in the deserts south of here, eating peyote cactus and participating in their Native American Church rituals.  The government long ago banned such activities by those not truly members of that "religion". The chorus is a variation of "yatahey", a Navaho chant that basically means "namaste" or just "hello".
