Jesus Shine On Bright

All you plastic saviors shout your messages out.

You don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.

You ain’t got nothing’ better to do

So you brag about that little bit of Jesus in you.

You’re on a throne you don’t own.  It’s time you give a damn.

See the little bit of Jesus in your fellow man.

Jesus Shine on Bright.  This world’s full of pain.

We need a shining light.  Come on back again.

We need a guiding light.  Come on back again.

The ragged mist settles with the setting sun.

The streams have turned icy where the last flames have gone.

The way back is forgotten.  It’s hidden from today.

My dreams sink from the surface and my loves all drift away.

What once seemed so light I can no longer lift,

Alone in an empty boat and floating adrift.

Chorus

Gulls float in the slip stream.  They soar with the wind.

I long to be free but it’s too hard to pretend.

Moonbeams pound at the foot of my life

Where the soldier’s souls sleeps beneath the guillotine’s knife.

The bottles are all empty and the wine glasses spilled.

Men speak in whispers about love that they’ve killed.

Chorus

NOTES:  I wrote this song in 1969 when I lived in one of the two log cabins at Granlibakken just outside of Tahoe City.  I wrote it for wife Janet Brown Rustad, a somewhat devout Christian and the wife of my friend and neighbor Rusty.  Janet said it was sacrilegious and never did listen to the entire tune.
