To Keep Fools Amused

There are times you love Jimmy.  There are times you love Emma.

And sometimes you’re just so confused.

There are days when you’re certain that everyone needs you.

There are nights when you know you’ve been used.

And at times when you kneel down you can’t help but feel

You’re only here To Keep Fools Amused.

There are mornings when it seems like the sun’s shining on you.

Afternoons when you just get the blues.

There are people around you that confuse and confound you.

With offers that you just can’t refuse.

And at the end of the day when it all falls away

You were just here To Keep Fools Amused.

You’ve had friends that you cherished and loves that all perished

Somewhere between the pills and the booze.

You believed in the Lord but now you believe you’re just bored

And nothing is new in the news.

And alone with your past you discover at last

You were just here To Keep Fools Amused.

There are places that you go to be a part of the show

And to dance with whomever you choose.

But it’s just an illusion and in all the confusion

You promised the Devil his dues.

And in the morning’s harsh light you concede that he was right.

You’ re only here To Keep Fools Amused.

There are times you love Jimmy.  There are times you love Emma.

And sometimes you’re just so confused.

There are days when you’re certain that everyone needs you.

There are nights when you know you’ve been used.

And at times when you kneel down to pray don’t you feel

You’re only here To Keep Fools Amused?

Yes at times when you kneel down you can’t help but feel

You’re only here To Keep Fools Amused.

NOTES:  I wrote this song for my very good friend Chuck Miller. Unfortunately, Chuck died a few years ago but he liked this song and I hope you do.  It seems to me that the best people are often also the most vulnerable people, those who are taken advantage of by others because they are generous enough to allow it, those whose tears we don't notice because they amuse us.
